First you pick a monitor type

Hexowatch’s first screen asks you to choose. Visual, content, HTML element, keyword, source code, technology, availability, API, WHOIS, sitemap, backlink, RSS or price: pick the monitor that matches the kind of change you’re after, then configure it. It’s a genuinely capable spread, and several of those monitors have nothing to do with page content at all. Watching a domain’s WHOIS record or a partner’s backlink is a different job that happens to live in the same product.

The choice is also the catch. You have to know in advance which type of change you’re waiting for. A competitor who rewrites a plan name is a content change; one who swaps the pricing widget is a source-code change; one who quietly drops a plan may be both. Hexowatch’s answer to that is the AI monitor, an auto-pilot that watches visual, content, source code and technology at once so you don’t have to pick. That solves the guessing. It doesn’t help with what arrives afterwards, which is a notification that something moved on the page.

PageDiff asks one question instead. Is PageDiff a good Hexowatch alternative?

It's a good fit if the pages you watch are ordinary web pages and your problem is reading the alerts, not catching the change. PageDiff has one monitor type: you describe what counts as a change in plain English, and each alert arrives as a written summary with a graded significance score. It's also the better fit if you need EU data residency. It's the wrong tool if you came to Hexowatch for uptime checks, WHOIS records, backlink monitoring, tech-stack detection, API endpoints or RSS feeds, because PageDiff does none of those.

It depends entirely on how many pages you watch and how often. Hexowatch meters checks, not pages, starting at $29/month for 4,500 checks. PageDiff's Starter is $10/month for 10 monitors and 1,000 checks, Pro is $30 for 50 monitors and 10,000 checks, Business is $100 for 200 monitors and 50,000. So for a few pages checked hourly, Hexowatch's Pro plan buys more checks than our Starter does. At 10,000 checks a month the order reverses, because that's $30 on our Pro against $55 on their Business. Does Hexowatch's AI monitor do the same thing as PageDiff's AI?

No, and the names make it sound closer than it is. Hexowatch describes its AI monitor as an auto-pilot mode that alerts you when any visual, content, source code or technology change is detected. It's a way to avoid choosing among the other twelve monitor types, so it widens what gets caught. PageDiff's AI runs at the two ends Hexowatch doesn't cover: plain English is how the monitor gets created, and a written summary with a significance score is how the change comes back. Broader detection and clearer alerts are different problems, and the auto-pilot solves the first one.

Where is my data stored with PageDiff, and how does that compare?

In the European Union. PageDiff is EU-hosted and EU-operated, GDPR-compliant by default, with page snapshots and saved HTML kept under EU data residency. Hexact, Inc. is a US corporation whose privacy policy says it primarily stores information in the United States, and its terms are governed by Delaware law with an arbitration agreement and a class-action waiver. Hexowatch's US, EU and Asia setting on Business plans controls where a check is made from, not where the results are stored. One point of care when reading either policy: check the date. Hexowatch's terms were last modified in May 2022 and its privacy policy in January 2024.

How long does each tool keep the history?

Hexowatch says it stores collected data for a minimum of three months on every plan, and you can export or download it during that period. PageDiff ties retention to the plan: 30 days on Starter, 90 on Pro, 365 on Business. So Hexowatch's floor beats our Starter, and our Pro and Business plans go further. If a long archive is the point of the exercise rather than the alerting, that's worth weighing.
